Alabama
Winter Workshop Provides Insight on Transgender Issues
The Alabama Mental Health Counselors Association (ALMHCA) recently held their
2008 Annual Winter Workshop Birmingham, Ala. Dr. Stacee Reicherzer delivered
a powerful presentation entitled Beyond Barbie, Ken, and the DSM: Working
with the Lived Experiences of Transgendered Clients. Dr. Reicherzer, who
identifies and lives as a transgender person, developed the presentation
through her experiences in her clinical practice and through her dissertation
research. The participants were educated on the continua of gender and
sexuality; skill-building in inviting client language and working with
clients' named experiences of gender; guidelines for supporting clients’
rights to choose hormones and surgical reassignments; and counselor resources
for support of the process of working with transgender clients.
ALMHCA was excited to be able bring awareness about the experiences and
issues related to working with transgender clients to mental health
counselors in the state.
Some of the comments in the evaluation included:
- This workshop teaches me how little I actually know
about transgender clients.
- This is such an important issue.
- Lots of useful information.
- Many thanks for a workshop on a very important topic.
- So needed-you have opened me to the complexity of
this topic.
- I would recommend this workshop to anyone who is in
the counseling filed.
