Give an Hour Initiative

Give an Hour is an organization currently focusing on the psychological needs of military personnel and their families. Its their mission is to develop national networks of volunteers capable of responding to both acute and chronic conditions that arise within our society. Their first target population is the U.S. troops and families who are being affected by the current military conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Give an Hour is asking licensed mental health professional nationwide literally to give an hour of their time each week to provide free mental health services to military personnel and their families.

Research will guide the development of additional services needed by the military community, and appropriate networks will be created to respond to those needs. Individuals who are not licensed can be involved in other types of volunteering efforts.

New Jersey MHCA Hosts Fall Retreat

New Jersey Mental Health Counselors Association (MJMHCA) is hosting a fall retreat at the Fairview Lakes YMCA in Newton, NJ, on October 24 – 26, 2008. Anyone interested in presenting or attending should contact Ann Adorneto. The setting is beautiful and we offer lots of restorative activities to regenerate the soul to keep on doing our work.

NJMHCA agrees with Dr. Gary Gintner, AMHCA past president, that promoting good mental health is a different goal from treating mental illness. We are taking this approach in promoting mental health by handing out a checklist for what makes up good mental health. We have a table at the local grocery store as well as Barnes and Noble to distribute this information. Several target areas are listed to pay attention and monitor. We also are offering information on how to find a counselor. The New Jersey State Chapter has taken it on as a part of our mission to distribute this information to the general public, especially during May.

President, NJMHCA

VACC Workshops to Address New Supervision Training Requirements

In July, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine signed into law amendments to the current regulations regarding qualifications and responsibilities of individuals providing supervision for residents in professional counseling. These new regulations will take effect September 3, 2008.

The Virginia Association of Clinical Counselors (VACC) is addressing the need for additional supervision training by holding workshops throughout the state that will provide the required 20 CEUs. Additional information can be found at www.vacc.org. Click here for complete information on the regulation changes.

Hildy Getz, EdD, LPC, LMFT, will teach a three-part series on clinical supervision. Sessions will take place in Chantilly, Va., on Sept. 19, 2008, and Jan 16 and May 15, 2009.
