My bags are packed, I’m ready to go!

By Karen F. Griner, MA
June 2006

The melody of the song written long ago rings in my thoughts as I begin to prepare for the summer that lies ahead. Summer has arrived! A bounty of sorts, granted by the Graduate School gods for the weary grad student, summer has arrived! Delivered for our delights, even amidst a course or two in a summer session here or there, summer brings robust opportunity for personal respite & professional prospects alike. One in particular, the AMHCA Annual Conference, bestows a bit of both.

The 2006 Annual Conference of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, Gateway to Healing: Keys for Recovery, is not one to be missed this year! A highlight, aside from the fantastic tracks and professional workshops planned for this year’s conference, is the Keynote speaker, Dr. David Satcher, former U.S. Surgeon General. And, a conference wouldn’t be complete without the opportunity to connect with colleagues – something the Graduate Student Committee has taken very seriously this year. Planned with graduate students in mind, the 2006 Annual Conference will host events like a Graduate Student Breakfast Reception for mingling with your peers, an evening outing for students [and a friend or significant other traveling with you!] to a St. Louis landmark, and our standing, endeared Graduate Student Luncheon! You’ll also find an especially new addition this year, the note board at Registration for grad students to post questions, notes, and correspondence throughout the length of the Conference – a great way to link people regionally and nationally AT Conference! Lastly, a special welcome at Registration will be given to graduate students, because we are SO excited to have you there!

So, pack your bags and get ready to go. It’s not too late! Register online at www.amhca.org

We hope to see you there! And, may your summer be filled with all the opportunities for which you’ve hoped and planned this past academic year.
