AMHCA and ACES Form Special Task Force to Enhance Clinical Mental Health Counselor Education and Supervision

Alexandria, VA  The American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) is pleased to announce that it has established a joint task force with the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) to explore mutually beneficial collaborations to enhance clinical mental health counselor education and supervision for the 2019-2020.

Some key topics the task force will be considering include:

  • A needs assessment related to gaps in clinical mental health counselor education and supervision.
  • Policies to enhance academic-clinician research partnerships.
  • Operationalizing CACREP CMHC standards and creating resources to support teaching and student development.
  • Clinical placement barriers.
  • Supervision standards, credentials, and training platforms.
  • Supervision requirements across states to enhance capacity.

“We are incredibly grateful for ACES’ commitment to the Task Force engagement process, and look forward to the discussions and contributions to this important work,” said Eric T. Beeson, Ph.D., President of the American Mental Health Counselors Association for 2019-20. “AMHCA is very pleased to be collaborating with a special organization like ACES where we share similar objectives in advancing clinical mental health counseling,” Dr. Beeson highlighted.

The Task Force was commissioned by Dr. Kris Goodrich, ACES President for 2019-2020, and Dr. Beeson. The Task Force will be chaired by Dr. Vicki White Kress.

The vision of The American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) it to position clinical mental health counselors to meet the health care needs of those we serve while advancing the profession.

AMHCA works to advance the profession of clinical mental health counseling by setting the standard for collaboration, advocacy, research, ethical practice, and education, training and professional development.
