Alexandria, VA – The Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) has announced that he will be retiring effective July 9, 2021.

Joel E. Miller, M.S. Ed., has led over 7,000 clinical mental health counselors who play a critically important impact on the lives of Americans with behavioral health conditions since 2013. Mr. Miller has been responsible for all operations of the organization and implementing strategic initiatives in support of the Board of Directors. He is the publisher of AMHCA’s Journal of Mental Health Counseling and The Advocate Magazine as well as many other research studies, white papers, and practice guidelines.

In his previous position at the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD), he led the development and implementation of NASMHPD’s policy agenda and regulatory strategies, which were designed to support State Behavioral Health Agencies and the state public behavioral health systems.

Before NASMHPD, at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Mr. Miller led NAMI’s State Policy team and Public Policy Institute, dedicated to improving the financing and delivery of mental health services at the state level for people with mental illness, and addressing mental health issues across the lifespan.

He has published well over 50 articles and reports on behavioral health and health care delivery and financing, new delivery models aimed at integrating mental health and physical health, health care reform strategies, Medicare and Medicaid policy, health workforce issues, and information technology implementation.

In his letter to the membership on Wednesday he stated, “It has been my honor to lead AMHCA these past eight years and serve the thousands of clinical mental health counselors around the country who in turn serve as primary mental health providers for your clients.  I have had only one overarching mission: To address the needs and promote the interests of AMHCA members every single day.” To read his full letter go to https://www.amhca.org/blogs/joel-miller/2021/04/27/with-gratitude-and-warm-regards.

Mr. Miller’s leadership in the mental health services community will be greatly missed and his contributions will be the solid foundation with which the organization will continue to be an increasingly strong force in the field. Mr. Miller’s support for the organization and its members will be a guiding beacon to help us continue our dedicated mission to improve the lives of our members.

We are incredibly grateful for his influence and management of our team, the Board of Directors, Committee Chairs and multitude of Chapter leaders, partners and volunteers. We will miss the unwavering support and joy he has brought to us and wish him nothing but happiness and relaxation in his next chapter.
