Leadership and Supervision: How to Effectively Manage Reports of Workplace Bullying
with Jan Kircher, Ph.D., MSW

Workplace bullying is a hot topic, on the rise and has tremendous negative emotional and psychological costs. The short and long term- effects on individuals and organizations of workplace bullying are real and substantial. This is important as mental health counselors work with targets, bystanders, and bullies and work for organizations that are at-risk for bullying.

Approximately 30% of workers reported being bullied and 19% have witnessed workplace bullying (Workplace Bullying Institute, 2021). In healthcare, 85% of nurses have experienced incivility (Bradley University, 2018) and many believe nursing has normalized it, even coining the term “eating their young” (Meissner, 1999). There is little data on how workplace bullying is impacting mental health professionals.

One thing is clear, the number of professionals experiencing workplace bullying is becoming an epidemic. Supervisors must understand workplace bullying to identify risk factors that lead to bully cultures, for workers and clients. This improves the likelihood of effectively intervening when reports are made in agencies.

This webinar presents a clear definition of workplace bully and addresses the differences between workplace bullying from conflict when intervening. Leaders will understand the risk factors and understand how to assess their work culture for workplace bullying. The skills needed to effectively intervene and manage reports of workplace bullying.

Objectives:
- To understand what workplace bullying is and what it isn’t.
- To identify how to identify and assess factors that put organizations at risk
- To understand and identify best practice strategies for interventions when reports of workplace bullying are made
