In this workshop, we will review what Gottman Method Couples Therapy is and the basic research that underlies it. We will explore the Sound Relationship House theory based on that research and how this applies clinically to couples therapy. We will explore specific interventions to use with couples to help them interrupt the 4 Horsemen, manage flooding, and compromise.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe what Gottman Method couples therapy is, list research that underlies the method, and identify the components of the Sound Relationship House Theory.
  2. Apply psychoeducation in order to interrupt the 4 Horsemen in couples’ communication.
  3. Apply a guided relaxation intervention in order to help couples learn to manage flooding.
  4. Apply the Compromise Ovals worksheet framework in order to teach couples to effectively compromise.
