Deconstructing Substance Use and Wellness from a Sociocultural Perspective
with Karla L. Sapp, EdD, LPC-S, LMHC-S, NCC, CCMHC

While substance use and wellness can both be viewed through many lenses, cultural beliefs and influences can influence the development of substance use and wellness strategies over a lifespan. As the population of the United States becomes more diverse, it is imperative that clinicians are able to take into consideration the cultural background of their clients when assessing for and identifying treatment interventions focused on substance use and wellness. The purpose of "Deconstructing Substance Use and Wellness from a Sociocultural Perspective" is to uncover the sociocultural issues that affect the acceptance, retention, and treatment outcomes of clients who have been diagnosed with a substance use disorder as well as provide culturally responsive interventions that can be utilized to ensure the process of recovery from a wellness perspective is established and maintained.

Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify the four functions that substance abuse serves in society
- Participants will be able to discuss substance abuse and wellness from a cultural context
- Participants will become familiar with the cultural recovery and how it intersects with wellness
