Today the U.S. House is expected to take up the 21st Century Cures Act, legislation to increase funding for NIH research and to fight opioid abuse. President Barack Obama and a broad bi-partisan group of legislators support the bill, which has become very lengthy and potentially a source of significant new health spending. Because it's the last health bill likely to pass this year, there's been a great deal of effort made to attach mental health amendments. AMHCA members and our coalition partners made a sustained effort to insert our Medicare provider status legislation in the catch-all bill, but unfortunately negotiators would not relent and add our provision. For details on the final bill and the mental health provisions that did make it in, see this latest update from the Kaiser Foundation.
