Details
The American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) aims to promote wellness through individual, relational, and structural means. Furthermore, historical and current conceptualizations of individual wellness note that it cannot be separated from social context. Gender represents an important aspect of that social context, as gender inequity may play a notable role in whether and how one can develop and maintain wellness. This is especially apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has both drawn attention to and exacerbated gender disparities in areas such as healthcare, family responsibilities, and workplace experiences. Thus, there is an urgent need to examine how counselors can consider aspects of gender in their work.

The goal of this Special Issue is to highlight the relation between gender and wellness and explore how it might inform practice. We are interested in submissions that clearly relate to any aspect of gender, gender identity, and wellness. These concepts can be broadly defined as long as they have relevance to counselors. Topics may include but are not limited to:
• Connections between various facets of wellness and gender
• Counseling strategies that promote wellness across those of different gender identities
• Social inequities involving gender that create barriers to wellness
• Structural approaches to improving wellness through gender equity
• The intersection of gender with other identities and wellness
• Gender role adherence and wellness We will evaluate proposals on their relevance, contribution to the literature, recommendations for practice, and readability.

Proposals (at least 300 words in length and no longer than 500 words) should be submitted by May 1, 2022, to editorjmhc@amhca.org, noting “JMHC Special Issue” in the email subject header. The proposal should include the working title/author(s), a detailed description of the proposed manuscript (include brief recommendations for counselors), and connection to the Special Issue. The Guest Editor, Dr. Elizabeth J. Russell, will review proposals and request full manuscript submissions by June 1, 2022. Invited authors should then submit full manuscripts by November 1, 2022. Full manuscripts will undergo a peer review process; therefore, please note that there is no guarantee of eventual acceptance of any submitted manuscript. All manuscripts must conform to the author guidelines for the Journal of Mental Health Counseling (see https://www.amhca.org/publications/jmhc/jmhcauthors, “Manuscript Submission”), including the 25-page limit (all inclusive).
