Andrew MacPherson

Andrew MacPherson is a Managing Partner at Healthsperien, LLC, with nearly two decades of health care legislative and regulatory policy and political experience. As Managing Partner, Andrew leads a team of experts who specialize in developing in-depth legislative and regulatory policy strategies, analyses, and strategic advocacy and communications for a wide-range of health care organizations, including Fortune 100 businesses, national health plans, professional associations, issue-based coalitions, and not-for-profit providers.

Andrew has a special emphasis and regularly speaks to national audiences on policy and political issues related to person-centered health care delivery transformation, including the crisis of social isolation and loneliness in the U.S., value-based insurance design (V-BID), and person-centered advanced illness and end-of-life care delivery. Andrew has been featured in variety of national media outlets on a range of health policy issues, including The Washington Post, Health Affairs, InsideHealthPolicy, Home Health Care News, and National Public Radio.

Prior to launching Healthsperien in 2012, Andrew was Founder and Principal of MacPherson Strategic, Inc., a health care policy, legislative strategy, and communications consulting firm.  MacPherson Strategic served a diverse set of health care stakeholder clients, including consumer groups, broad-based advocacy coalitions, innovative health care start-ups, and the large public sector health care purchasers.


Edward Garcia

Edward Garcia is the co-Director of the Coalition to End Social Isolation and Loneliness and Senior Vice President of Healthsperien, a DC-based policy and strategy advocacy firm.  Eddie has expansive expertise in health and social policy development and advocacy for low-income and other vulnerable populations. He has led and been actively involved in numerous multi-stakeholder coalitions aimed at improving our nation’s health care delivery and financing systems, and he brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for policy and program development to expand access to social determinants of health services. .

Before joining the Coalition, Eddie served as the Executive Director for Federal Affairs at CareSource, a government programs-focused health insurer. He oversaw the development of federal policy and advocacy across their multi-state health plans.  His portfolio included policy development and advocacy on Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, Health Insurance Exchanges, dual-eligible coverage, and social determinants of health programs and financing.  Before joining CareSource, Eddie served as Director of Federal Relations for the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association where he maintained a similar portfolio related to Administration advocacy and regulatory policy development.

Prior to joining the private sector, Eddie held positions in both the Executive and Legislative branches. From 2007 – 2012, Eddie worked at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services where he oversaw the development and implementation of quality measurement across all CMS quality programs. From 2012-2015, Eddie served the House Energy and Commerce committee as a professional staff member overseeing their Medicare finance and quality portfolios.

Hailing from the great state of Ohio, Eddie received his B.A. in political science and comparative health politics from Boston University in 2004.  In 2008, Eddie received his Master of Health Science in Public Health degree from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and inducted into the Delta Omega honors society as the valedictorian of his graduating class

Courtland C. Lee

Courtland Lee is a Professor in the Counselor Education Program at the Washington DC campus of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He is the author, editor, or co-editor of seven books on multicultural counseling and three books on counseling and social justice. He is also the author of three books on counseling African American males. In addition, he has published numerous book chapters and articles on counseling across cultures.

Dr. Lee is a Past-President of the International Association for Counselling. He is also a Fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, the only American to receive this honor.

Dr. Lee is also a Fellow and Past President of the American Counseling Association. He is also a past President of the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development. In addition, Dr. Lee is a past President of Chi Sigma Iota, the international counseling honor society. He is a charter member of Chi Sigma Iota’s Academy of Leaders for Excellence.

Dr. Lee is the former editor of the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development and currently serves on the Council of Consulting Elders for that journal. He served on the editorial board of the International Journal for the Advancement of Counseling and was a Senior Associate Editor of the Journal of Counseling and Development.

Dr. Lee has held faculty positions as a counselor educator at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Virginia, the University of Maryland at College Park, and the University of Malta.

H. Alan Goodman

H. Alan Goodman, PhD, PSY, LCMHC is a retired Air Force Behavioral Science officer and current past-president of AMHCA. He has been an active member at both the state and national levels for over two decades. He served the New Hampshire Mental Health Counselors’ Association (NHMHCA) as a legislative liaison, a member of the New Hampshire Mental Health Coalition, and NHMHCA president. At the national level he participated in a number of initiatives including meeting with federal political leaders in support of MEDICARE participation, was a member of the AMHCA 21st Century initiative and of course was president in 2018 – 2019. He is a past member of the New Hampshire State Board of Mental Health Practice where he served for two terms, six years in that capacity. He strongly supports academic programs that educate our next generation of clinical mental health counselors and has visited/presented on behalf of AMHCA/NHMHCA at universities and colleges and helped and guided graduate students as they begin their careers in the mental health profession. He has remained an active advocate because he deeply believes in who we are and what we do.


Ellen V. A. Papanikolaou, LCMHC, MLAD

Ellen provides counseling and consultation services to individuals and couples using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, family systems, psychodynamic and solution focused techniques. As a practical, interactive therapist, her treatment approach is to provide support and feedback to help clients resolve current problems and long-standing patterns. She received her MA in Clinical Counseling/Psychology in 1997. Her undergraduate degree is a BA in Communication/Public Relations and Public Speaking. She is also currently a doctoral student working towards her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. Ellen is the current North Atlantic Regional Director of the American Mental Health Counselors’ Association (AMHCA) as well as the Past President of her state chapter the New Hampshire Mental Health Counselors’ Association (NHMHCA). A licensed clinical mental health counselor (LCMHC) since 2006, and a masters level licensed drug and alcohol counselor (MLADAC) since 2017, she also has been trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and motivational/positive psychology. Her professional/personal experiences also include developing a speakers bureau, production management, public relations/public speaking, writing for a medical trade publication and teaching at the college level.

Eric Maisel, PhD

Eric Maisel has worked as, first, a family therapist, and for the past thirty as a creativity coach, coaching creative and performing artists, training creativity coaches, and writing seminal books on coaching that include Coaching the Artist Within, Inside Creativity Coaching, Secrets of a Creativity Coach, and the forthcoming The Creativity Workbook for Coaches and Creatives. His books for creative and performing artists include Fearless Creating, Mastering Creative Anxiety, Creative Recovery, Creativity for Life, and The Van Gogh Blues. In his work in the areas of life purpose and meaning, Dr. Maisel has written Life Purpose Boot Camp and developed the philosophy of life known as kirism.

In his work in the areas of critical psychology and critical psychiatry, he has served as editor for parent resources at Mad in America, been active in the global movement to find alternatives to the DSM and the ICD models, and presented lectures and workshops nationally and internationally, for example providing the keynote for the International Society for Ethical Psychology and Psychiatry. Paul M. Duck 

Paul M. Duck brings over 40 years of experience in leadership and management focusing on managed care, health information technology organizations, strategy, business development, and market expansion, and customer experience optimization to the OPEN MINDS team.

Prior to joining OPEN MINDS, Mr. Duck served as the Vice President, Strategy & Development at Beacon Health Options. In this role, Mr. Duck led the organization’s strategy and business development efforts - responsible for a 30% increase in net revenue and initiated over $1 billion in revenue generation. Mr. Duck was active in national behavioral health initiatives as an executive of Beacon Health Options, including participating as a speaker at national and state association meetings.

Before joining Beacon Health Options, Mr. Duck was the Vice President of Business Development at Netsmart Technologies. During his tenure, Mr. Duck was responsible for business planning, including, the oversight of strategic activities including acquisitions, development, and execution of strategic initiatives, and positioning, and sales of large strategic customers. He also led the rollout of the company’s benchmarking and data analytics product suite.

Prior to Netsmart, Mr. Duck served as the Chief Executive Officer for Coastal Orthopedics and Pain Management, a large group practice with five clinic locations and two ambulatory surgical centers. As the organization’s chief executive officer, Mr. Duck was responsible for significant positive changes in leadership and corporate culture, financial and operational performance, compliance, and governance. Mr. Duck improved net collections by over $1 million per month and grew the practice through negotiating better contract rates with payers. He also implemented an organizational rebranding initiative and launched a new marketing campaign.

Prior to Coastal Orthopedics and Pain Management, Mr. Duck served as the President and Chief Executive Officer for Florida Radiology Imaging, one of the largest outpatient diagnostic imaging service companies serving the greater Orlando market. During his tenure, Mr. Duck led the construction of three new, full modality, diagnostic imaging locations. Mr. Duck revolutionized the company’s culture by creating a highly attractive and functional work environment.

Mr. Duck earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Management from Case Western Reserve University. He earned his Associate of Arts in Electronic Engineering Technology from the Electronic Technology Institute. Mr. Duck received an award by Inc Magazine for leading Florida Radiology Imaging as one of America’s fastest-growing companies. Mr. Duck recently served as a contributing author to the book The New Health Age: The Future of Health Care in America.
