May 5, 2009: Montana LCPCs' Big Win

By Whitney Meyerhoeffer posted 05-09-2009 00:00

On May 5, 2009, Montana's licensed clinical professional counselors (LCPCs) won big with Governor Brian Schweitzer's signing of an amended SB 235. SB 235 now clarifies that LCPCs may perform psychological testing, evaluation, and assessment.

For two years, the Montana Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors Association (MLCPCA) has lobbied Montana's legislature for the ability to conduct psychological testing. Montana psychologists mobilized to oppose permitting Montana LCPCs and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) to perform psychological testing. SB 235 passed the Montana House and Senate overwhelmingly. MLCPCA then worked with the Governor's Office to expand psychological testing statutes to include testing by LCPCs and LCSWs. AMHCA, along with the Montana chapter of the National Association of Social Workers and the National Board for Certified Counselors, supported the MLCPCA's advocacy efforts.
