About the Event:

Perhaps these days more than ever, counselors contend with a variety of threats to themselves and their practices. In this presentation, we will look at several scams currently targeting counselors, and how counselors can protect themselves from these scams. We will look at risks to counselors responding to subpoenas. The rules concerning the confusing subject of practicing across state lines will be discussed. An update on the counselor compact will be provided. Based on his experience as the lead ethics investigator for the West Virginia Board of Counseling, the presenter will offer strategies counselors can use to lower the chances of being the target of a licensure complaint. Guidance on how to respond to a complaint if one is received will be offered. Case scenarios will be discussed. In all cases, protecting the counselor’s financial, physical and emotional well-being will be the priority.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  • List three strategies that, in the presenter’s experience, lower counselor risk of state licensure ethics complaints.
  • Describe three common scams targeting counselors.
  • Accurately identify the number one most important rule when counseling across state lines.
