About the Event
Harm reduction helps individuals reduce the consequences of risky behavior and is a proven, effective intervention. However, many clinicians fear the liability of working with someone who is making unhealthy, dangerous, and illegal choices. This presentation will describe Harm Reduction Psychotherapy’s (HRP) core concepts, how to use it in practice, and why it is a controversial topic. Referencing the Board of Counseling Regulations and AMHCA Code of Ethics, the presenters will role-play how they have managed the ethical challenges of practicing HRP. Participants will walk away with a clearer understanding of the ethical considerations in using HRP with individuals and groups as well as tangible tools to engage clients in any stage of change.

Navigate ethical challenges when practicing HRP using the Board of Counseling Regulations Standards of Practice and AMHCA Code of Ethics

About the Presenter:
Cyndi Turner, LCSW, LSATP, MAC is the Co-Founder & CEO of Insight Into Action Therapy and Insight Recovery Centers. She is a harm reduction therapist who has been in the addiction treatment field for over three decades. Cyndi is Co-Chair of Moderation Management’s Board of Directors, qualified expert witness, clinical supervisor for licensure, field instructor for MSW students, therapist for players involved in the National Football League Program for Substances of Abuse, and nationally recognized trainer on alcohol moderation and harm reduction methods. She designed the Alcohol Moderation Assessment which predicts who may be a successful candidate for alcohol moderation. Cyndi is the author of numerous articles and three books including: The Clinician’s Guide to Alcohol Moderation: Alternative Methods and Management Techniques and Practicing Alcohol Moderation: A Comprehensive Workbook.



Craig James, LCSW, LSATP, MAC has been treating substance use disorders for almost thirty years. He is the Co-Founder & Chief Operations Officer of Insight Into Action Therapy and Insight Recovery Centers. Insight was recognized as the Loudoun County Health and Wellness and Small Business of the Year. He co-developed and implements the Dual Diagnosis Recovery Program©, is a clinical supervisor for licensure, and is a nationally recognized trainer on alcohol moderation and harm reduction. Craig serves on the executive board of the Virginia Association of Addiction Professionals.
