To assist applicants the AMHCA Credentialing Certification Board has provided the reviewers checklist as a helpful guide for you to see if you meet all the criteria before you apply.

Certification - Fellow in Multiculturalism and Social Justice

 Who is this credential for?

For LCMHCs who are independently licensed, AMHCA offers advanced credentialing certifications. The AMHCA Fellow certification is for those individuals who possess specialized knowledge of multiculturalism and social justice advocacy as well as intervention services, the teaching of intervention services, have supervised, researched and published..


What does this credential represent?

The AMHCA Fellow certification signifies that an LCMHC has established the clinical counseling necessary to support and integrate systematic coordination of behavioral healthcare with Multicultural and Social Justice Advocacy as well as interventions. Much like the Diplomate, the standing of Fellow is attested to by use their unique perspective of empowerment-based treatment modalities, contemporary, and historical prevention/intervention, individual and group wellness approaches, public policy, population health, and personal growth. The AMHCA Fellow designation represents LCMHCs who coordinate care, supervision, education for university students, helps to advance public policy with individuals, families, primary care providers, other medical providers, other healthcare professionals, state/governmental agencies, third-party payers and public health professionals..

Successful applicants will be awarded a certificate and may refer to themselves as an AMHCA Fellow in Multiculturalism and Social Justice or AMHCA Fellow

Complete Requirements

Be a Clinical Member of AMHCA

Have completed all of the licensing requirements as defined by the respective state and have been awarded the license to practice independently. The applicant must have been licensed to practice independently for a minimum of five years.

Multiculturalism and Social Justice require that the applicant meet all of the following requirements (A - K): 

  1. Demonstrated competency in the following areas that is in accordance with the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies Framework developed by Sue, Arredondo, and McDavis (1992) as well as current CACREP Standards CHMCs will:

    • acknowledge their assumptions, values, views, biases and beliefs
    • acknowledge their own privileged and status of marginalized groups
    • acknowledge how their privileged and marginalized status influences their view of the world
    • acknowledge the potential harm caused by stereotypes and show flexibility in individual conceptualization
    • acknowledge how their privileged and marginalized status provides advantages and disadvantages in society
    • show a commitment to learning about the cultural backgrounds of those being served while also committing to assess the Fellow’s own status as how this impacts treatment
    • respectfully express curiosity about the history and lived experiences of all people
    • exchange ideas and beliefs in an open-minded way
    • analyze the harmful impact of bias and injustice on the world, both historically and in present day
    • show a commitment to cultural humility
  2. Demonstrate value and worth in all humans
  3. Create as well as cultivate safe spaces for authentic multicultural voices and skill development
  4. Empower for social advocacy and social justice in clinical counseling services
  5. Promote opportunities for self-awareness and professional growth for the inclusion of cultural competencies
  6. Include cultural humility and proficiency in scope of practice
  7. Document service to the profession for at least two years (e.g., serving on a licensing board, on a state chapter board, in an executive or committee position for a professional clinical organization, etc.)
  8. A doctorate in Counselor Education or a doctorate related to the professional identity of Clinical Mental Health Counselors.
  9. Graduate level instruction and/or research that has had a demonstrated impact beyond the academic institution, which specifically contributes to the profession of Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and includes both of the following:
    • Seven years of full-time teaching graduate courses and/or research.
    • Publication of one or more texts, four or more peer-reviewed journal articles, or equivalent evidence of published research.
  10. One of the following:
    1. Three years of experience as a clinical supervisor in an academic or research setting – or –
    2. The documented development of an approved new course of study, or the development of an approved new research proposal, or other mental health professional accomplishments in teaching and/or research that specifically contributes to the profession of Clinical Mental Health Counseling (e.g., theory-building, public policy, professional practice, social justice, etc.).
