Microaggressions in Counseling: Reflections During a Racial Pandemic
This webinar will explore research related to microaggressions in the counseling relationship and the impact this has on clients and counselors’ personal wellness. Implications for counselor of Color self-care, counselor in training education, and supervision strategies will be discussed. Specific focus will be directed on how counselors navigate discussions related to marginalized identities within the current context of the racial pandemic.

Objectives:
1. Participants will identify examples of counselor and client microaggressions in counseling sessions
2. Participants will learn strategies to address and repair the impact of microaggressions in counseling
3. Participants will explore self-care and supervisory strategies to address counselor directed microaggressions in counseling



PRESENTER
Susan F. Branco, PhD, LPC (VA), LCPC (MD), NCC, ACS, BC-TMH
Dr. Branco is a licensed professional counselor in Virginia and Maryland. She is an approved supervisor in Maryland, Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), and Board Certified Tele mental health provider. Dr. Branco earned her BA in Human Services and MA in Rehabilitation Counseling from the George Washington University. She earned a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from Virginia Tech. For fourteen years she maintained an independent clinical practice specializing in working with adults, children, and families connected to adoption and foster care. In addition, she has professional experience working in community mental health, pre natal care clinics, and with immigrant populations. She utilizes attachment theory, family systems, and trauma informed approaches in her clinical practice.

Dr. Branco previously served in brick and mortar institutions as a Clinical Assistant Professor overseeing a clinical mental health counseling training clinic, a Director of Clinical Training, and Department Chair prior to her role as Clinical Assistant Professor/Clinical Training Director at Counseling@Northwestern.

Her research interests examine how school and clinical mental health counselors work with persons adopted transracially and clinical supervision practices with counselors of Color. In addition, she has several peer-reviewed publications related to her research. She is a 2014 National Board of Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) Fellow and serves on the Minority Fellowship Program Advisory Council.

Finally, Dr. Branco is a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and recently completed two years of service as co-chair for the By Laws Committee. She is also a division member of both the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD), a member of AMCD’s LatinX and Native American concerns groups, and the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC).
