Angele Moss-Baker Becomes First African-American Woman President of AMHCA
Angele Moss-Baker is the first Black Woman to become President of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) in its 44-year history. She is the owner of Comprehensive Addiction & Psychological Services LLC, in Washington D.C. Angele is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Master Addiction Counselor, Employee Assistance Counselor-C, and holds the Diplomate, Clinical Mental Health Specialist in Substance Abuse and Co-Occurring Disorders. She has over 25 years of experience providing behavioral health treatment services to diverse populations.
“It is my honor to represent the thousands of clinical mental health counselors at the forefront of discussions when policymaker and mental health stakeholders search for practical solutions to the challenges in our nation’s mental health system. I am committed to do whatever I can to address the needs and promote the interests of clinical mental health counselors around the country,” Moss-Baker said. “I will listen and serve as your liaison to open doors and make tough decisions for the enrichment of AMHCA and its membership as a whole.”

This webinar will explore the initial phase of clinical assessment through the lens of racial equity and the ongoing impact of white supremacy and oppression on our initial alliance building with clients. Participants will examine aspects of their own assessment procedures and potential ways to engage in more equitable relationship building from the beginning of the therapeutic experience. Implications for the initial assessment phase of therapy as well as treatment planning and documentation will be discussed. Specific focus will be directed towards how to create sustainable shifts towards a more equitable clinical practice.

Objectives:
- Participants will identify and discuss examples of racism and oppressive language in their own initial assessment of clients.
- Participants will examine potential strategies to implement more equitable alliance building at the beginning of the therapeutic relationship.

Congress Passes Landmark VA Mental Health Counselor Bill
Today, the House of Representatives approved S. 785, sending a major VA mental health and counseling bill to President Trump for signature. The bill is the most significant new legislation for the counseling profession in over a decade and a tremendous advancement for mental health counselors working for the federal government, and particularly the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Based on the AMHCA report, nearly 41 percent of adults nationally are reporting that they are suffering from a mental health disorder -- or about 103 million adults in the U.S.

"AMHCA Standards" is a living document that is updated on a continuing basis by AMHCA's Advancement for Clinical Practice Committee to meet the needs of the public and the profession.
