AMHCA Releases Major Publication Promoting the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Profession
AMHCA announced yesterday the release of a major publication -- “Essentials of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Profession,” offering an inside view of a profession that makes a unique impact on improving both wellness and well-being. Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors are distinctly contributing to the public’s growing awareness that physical wellness is integrated with mental and emotional well-being.
AMHCA supports LCMHCs and is dedicated to advancing the clinical mental health counseling profession through professional development, educational publications, continuing education and training, career guidance, standards of practice, research, advocacy, and other resources such as networking opportunities.
“If you’d like to gain a greater understanding of the clinical mental health counseling profession, Essentials is your resource,” Dr. Beeson highlighted.
The Coronavirus and Covid19: Resources on What You Need to Know and for Your Families, Your Clients and Your Practice
AMHCA has urged the federal government to take steps to address the mental health consequences of COVID-19 during the current crisis and beyond. We know during the SARS epidemic that many people expressed helplessness and their mental health had severely or moderately deteriorated because of the epidemic – and demonstrated posttraumatic stress symptoms. Similar effects should be anticipated in the U.S. if COVID-19 begins to significantly spread.
Join AMHCA on a trip to Scotland!
Each president of AMHCA has an opportunity to select a location and plan a trip during their commitment to the office (President-elect, president, past president). As the current past-president, I have decided to go to Scotland. On May 6th and 7th of 2020, we will be in Edinburgh, Scotland, which for me is a truly magical place. The goal is to have some interchange – learn how they prepare clinical mental health counselors and perhaps understand and compare some of the differences between the two countries. On the second day, May 7th, they have a student postgraduate research conference, where their masters and doctoral students present on their research projects and we have been invited to attend. This is not a conference but rather a travel opportunity and it will give us a chance to build relationships.

2020 ASCA Webinar Series: School Counselors vs. Mental Health Counselors
About four million 9 to 17 year olds have a major mental health disorder resulting in significant impairment at home, at school and with peers, according to a report of the Surgeon General’s Conference on Children’s Mental Health. At least one in five children and adolescents has a mental health disorder, and one in 10 has a serious disorder. Mental health disorders affect students’ ability to succeed in school both academically and socially.
After viewing this webinar, you should be able to:
Identify the unique role of school counselors and mental health counselors in addressing students’ mental health needs.
Describe how to address the mental health needs of students appropriately depending on your role and expertise.
Identify best practices for schools to follow to protect the mental health and safety of all students.
